Everything, Everything & The Sun Is Also The Star | BOOK REVIEW

Hi guys! I am back with a book review! It has been a long time since I picked up a book to read, but reading is always my favourite thing to do, as always. Ignore the picture above lol, I just feel like I need a thumbnail for each post loll (so that the layout of my blog looks consistent), and I don't mean to pose like a tutor trying to sell reference books lolll but this is the only good photo I got from the 30 photos I've taken, it's so hard to do the focusing when you're doing the photo shoot alone...ughh. I've always wanted to write about the books I read, but I don't read as often as I used to do back in secondary school and back in that time, I don't have a good device to take pictures and I don't own a personal laptop so it's really hard for me to write, but I'll start writing book review from now if I read any new book (I usually read fictional novels, especially young adult book), but please don't expect me to do book review very often because book is expensive and study is kinda busy right now, so book review will be done like how I run this blog, which means updating whenever I want to hahaha. Anyways, I read two books recently, they're both written by Nicola Yoon which are her famous first book Everything, Everything and The Sun Is Also The Star.

So, let's get into the review part!

Everything, Everything

The story of this is about a 17 year-old girl called Madeline who has SCID since young, which is a type of immune system deficiency, so she is basically allergic to the whole world, this disorder cost her freedom of getting out of her house, she has lived in the house with her mom and her personal nurse Carla for 17 years until she meets Olly, who just moves into the house next door to Madeline with his family. Madeline loves to observe people from her window and that's the only thing she can do staying all day in the house, Olly notices her and leaves his email address on his bedroom window which is exactly opposite to Madeline's. From that day onward, they start to send email to each other, chatting until late night, then Olly start to have short visit to Madeline house under the supervision (help) of Carla, but they are never allowed to touch each other, Olly even has to be decontaminated before he enters the house. Their relationship becomes closer and closer afterward.

The beginning of the story up until like 120++ pages is boring, I'm sorry but it is. I was so close to stop reading it, I thought it's just another "sick teen" y/a story, but luckily I stay reading until the end lol, because it's not at all bad, it's just the beginning part that is boring. The beginning part only revolves around the house and how Madeline starts to develop her friendship with Olly, I understand that Nicola Yoon is trying to show us how boring Madeline's life is being trapped in the house, but I think the whole part of this can be shorten a bit, so that we have more pages for the ending, which I'm going to rant about later. Moreover, the character of Olly is not well presented in the beginning part, I could say that the beginning part (I mean from pg 1 to pg 120++) did not show many dimensions of his character, he is presented as a cheerful, charming, sporty guy with a lot of knowledge of the outside world and tons of cheesy lines lol, I felt like Madeline is too naive for him. I didn't like his character up until the middle part, where the story is not just revolves within the glass house they meet each other anymore because it shows more of Olly's characteristics. BUT, the nice things about this whole part that I claim to be boring is Madeline's character development, how her view of the outside world and mentality changes and she starts to aware that she's slowly falling in love with Olly.

Then, when the story reaches the middle part where it's not just within the glass house anymore, this is where it gets interesting and following by a major plot twist (DENG DENG DENG), the plot twist is genuinely so good that I didn't see it coming, but after I finished it and go through the story again, there are definitely some hints at the front. After the good plot twist, here comes the ending :) The ending is so freaking rush that I kinda hate it, there are a lot of things that need to be explained, but they were just kind of ignored for some points, after the plot twist there should be a drastic change in Madeline's view of the world but it's being written so briefly that I don't like it, there are more details to write about Madeline's changes.

Overall I'll give it a 3.5 out of 5, I love the writing style and the presentation of the story. Unlike traditional novels that are words after words and lengthy chapters after lengthy chapters, the chapters are short which can keep people for reading, and there are a lot of illustrations, small notes that Madeline wrote which are so cute, I especially love her spoiler review on books she read, those reviews are written according to her mood changes and the situations that she's in at the moment. I really recommend this book to anyone who is new to reading novels, because it's short and easy to read, the vocabulary for this book is kinda easy, at least I have no problem reading throughout the whole book. (Anyways, English is not my first language.)

The Sun Is Also The Star
The story revolves around the magical day when Natasha, an undocumented Jamaican immigrant in America who's facing a deportation that night and she's trying to get help to stay in America through legal procedures, meets Daniel, an enthusiastic Korean American future poet who is arranged to attend an admission interview to get into Yale college. The story is a little too unrealistic and too magical for me, I guess that's just the way Nicola Yoon likes her stories to be, same goes to Everything, Everything. BUT the story is good in reflecting the differences of concepts and beliefs that Daniel and Natasha hold for their life and how they somehow change their long-believed concepts after they meet each other. it also allows you to think from both of their views. I love how different Daniel and Natasha are, and I absolutely love their characteristics, Natasha is a smart realist that believes in nihilism and science while Daniel is a typical Asian soft good boy, optimistic and poetic, plus he is a contagion crier who cries when he sees someone's crying, which is so cuteeeee. I love that the story talks about races (and explain the background of certain racist topics), immigrants (the different mindsets and culture that the different generation of immigrants hold eg the parents and the kids), interacial relationship (which is a huge deal to Asian family aka Daniel's family) and how love means differently to different people, and the universe cannot be explained in any extreme definitions that you hold and believe in. I feel like this second book has more meaning into it and it has more impact than the first one.

For the writing, I really like that it's written in the point of view of Natasha and Daniel in different chapters, and there are also some side chapters beside the main story line of Natasha and Daniel, those are use to explain some terms, history and background of something features in Natasha and Daniel's chapters, the side chapters also includes the stories and pov of the other characters that Natasha and Daniel came across, and it seems like everyone and everything is connected. Nicola always tend to have new ways in presenting her story which is very creative and she still keeps her style of writing that I really like, no lengthy chapters, she always keeps her chapters short which will effectively keep you reading instead.
This book is a little harder to read compares to Everything, Everything in terms of vocabulary, I look up for more words than I did for that book, I didn't really look up for words much for that book and English is not my first language so looking up for words is also a way of learning, but still manageable to read and comprehend. (To kill a mocking bird is the one that I need to read with a dictionary beside me.) I'll give a 4 out of 5 for this book, I really like it even better than the first one that causes me to binge reading I literally read 320 pages of the book and finished it in one day.

That's all for my book review today, see you next time! 🌻

Why I Started Blogging

Hi peeps, I'm back! Today I'm writing this because there are quite a lot of people around me that are curious about how I started blogging and why, so I decided to write this on my blog.

I had been blogging for 4 years, since 2014, but not frequently, which is when  I was 15 years old. I remember the first time I created this blog, it was super ugly, my background was super tumblr-ish, that time I was so geeky and tumblr-ish, I downloaded a lot of pictures from weheartit, tumblr and pinterest. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to use blogger and how to design it, and eventually I chose to make it this basic lol. Blogging was hard to me that time, because I don't own a laptop I used my family (but mostly used by brother and it's in my brother's room) desktop to write and it's so awkward every time my mom opened the door and looked at my screen. ._. But she still doesn't quite know about what I am doing right now, I don't think she knows I have a blog tho.

The first blog that I'd read was a blog by Zoella. If you don't know who she is, she is a famous UK online influencer, she first started her online career through writing blog, after she gained a lot of readers, she started her YouTube channel, and now she already had 12 million subscribers on YouTube. She wrote about her panic attack and how she overcomes it in her blog. She is the most honest and genuine person I've ever seen online. She is my inspiration on writing blog, she is the one that introduced this platforms to me, where I can finally had a place of my own and express myself through writing. As I always said, I'm not good at expressing myself verbally, in speech, and I like to keep things to myself and eventually I will get stress out about having too much trash in my mind but I find writing is the most effective way for me to express even if no one reads them but it is still a great platform for me to output all my thoughts.

The other reason is that I really love writing. I used to have a Wattpad account where I wrote fan fiction and novels online, but I some how stopped it because I don't feel like my stories were great lol. I wrote One Direction fan fiction, Jack and Finn Harries fan fiction, stories about vampires, spirits and super power hahaha. I remember that I did have people reading my fan fiction tho, I had 90 - 100 views on my Wattpad stories, I know it's very little, but I was so happy that time when I see people actually read my works.

Although I had been writing my blog for such long time but I still have very little views compare to other blogger, but I really appreciate every one of you who really spend time on reading what I write. Many people don't understand why I continue blogging with such little views, I don't understand either, but I can't imagine myself without writing. Anyway, I really appreciate you, who are reading this, thank you so much, no matter how long have you been reading my blog. And I know there are a few people who had already been in Terriesland for 4 years, from my very first post until now, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

And for people that are worried about me from the last post, I'm good now, not the best but yeah better, thank you to people that encourage me through dm and comments, thanks a lot. xo.

Bye. xoxo. 🌻

Moving Tips | Dorm or small room

Hello, it's May! That means most of the May intake college freshmen are going to college, and some of them might be moving out from their home to a new place. So, I'm here to share my moving tips where I concluded from my experience last year. I'm going to give tips for college students who move to dorm or small rooms so these are just simple moving tips which are not suitable for people who wants to move into a unit or an apartment. Let's get started, shall we?

First, do a checklist of what you will be needed in your new place. Writing the items down in your planner or notebook, and separate them into two sections, "already have" and "items that need to buy" so that you will not forget to buy things that you need. Tick on the item you've packed or purchased with a pen of a colour, and when you do double check, tick with another colour of pen, this helps you from missing out any items.

Next, move in your stuffs at least three days before college starts. When you started putting things into your new place, you can see what you missed out or what you need but you never thought of, like extension wires or storage stuffs.  Some items that are on sharing basis (if you have roommates) like dust bin, standing fan, buckets or cleaning utensils, you can discuss with your roommate and see who have old ones and willing to share so that you guys can save the money from buying a new one, also if you buy a new one when you guys are moving out, it's hard to tell who the items belong to hahaha.

Heavy furnitures, if your dorm room provide desk and wardrobe then great, but if you're renting a room usually they don't provide furniture for rooms. You can buy second hand furniture from seniors who lived in your room before or seniors that live nearby so that you don't have to move your heavy furniture all the way from you home, and second hand item is much cheaper. If you can't find second hand furniture you can buy those foldable desk from Tesco, or simple desk from Ikea for RM99 if you want your furniture to look good together. (like me :P) For wardrobe, you only need simple wardrobe which can be separate apart, so that you can set it up after you move to your place. For bed, if your dorm room already provide bed and mattress I advice you to bring your own mattress for hygiene reason.

Ikea bag is a very helpful item for moving. Moving into small room is much easier as you might have lesser fragile item, so you can stuff your items into ikea bag. Bags are much flexible than boxes when you arrange them into car. Last but not least, decorating your room into what you like is very important because everyone loves going back to a comfy and cosy room after an exhausting day. If you have extra money where you earn from your holiday job, you can buy better furniture from Ikea, ikea has a lot of nice and cheap furniture and you can buy same colour of furniture, so that they look like they're a set. If you have roommates you might not have chance to plan how you want your furniture to place, and you will have lesser decorating chance, but you can decorate your desk! Your desk is your very own place and corner so you are free to decorate it!

That's it for my tips, hope you find this post helpful. See you next time, byeee. xx.  🌻

Get To Know Introverts

Hello internet, today we're going to talk about introvert. As I'm growing up, I started to know myself more and I figured out that I am actually an introvert. I think knowing yourself is a really important thing because growing up you might find you losing yourself. So, what is an introvert? People are mentally separated into few groups, which are introverts (a kind of person who is less outgoing), extroverts (a kind of person who is extremely outgoing) and ambiverts (a mixture of extroverts and introverts). Let an introvert tells you what is an introvert.

The society have a certain stereotype or misunderstanding towards introverts. Many people thought introvert is a kind of mental illness which hate people and socializing. NO, we introverts don't hate people nor socializing. We can be sociable, but too much socializing will drain our energy, we find socializing really tiring. I do find socializing exhausting too, when I come back from classes or anywhere, I will be really tired and really appreciate to have an alone time to recharge. It will be okay to have people around when I'm recharging but just don't talk to me. You wouldn't find me in crowded and noisy places like concert or party, because I really cannot stand crowd, and when there is crowd there must be conversation, or small talk, and this is where our energy started to drain, sometimes you just can't avoid talking to people, and I hate small talk, small talk is the most awkward thing ever. (So that's why I avoid saying hi to not-so-close-friends when I saw them) That is also why I don't go to famous or internet hyped restaurants which need to queue in a long queue and eat in an environment full of people chit-chatting, luckily I don't have too much claims toward food.

Next, introvert is a deep thinker. We think a lot about one thing, we think before speak, doing certain action and making certain decision so we are good at planning. And this makes us hate sudden plan hahaha. I hate sudden plan, invitation that comes one day before the actual event I usually reject it. Any sudden plan that will mess up my plan is not welcomed in my schedule. I need time to prepare myself before going to somewhere, not only about preparing my outfit also prepare myself mentally, so the best time range to invite an introvert is one week before the actual day. :D And sometime when I have accepted the invitation but when the actual day comes, I regret. ._. Video call is also a thing that need to be planned or alert earlier, if you video call me in sudden, I'll usually hang up. :D Because video call is as awkward as small talk, I have to plan what to talk to you because looking at each other face to face with no conversation is awkward af. And to send invitation to an introvert, it's best to text instead of calling, because you might never reach them by calling them, because they will hang up your call as they don't like phone calling, :D

If you're an introvert don't be insecure or hide yourself, just tell your friends or people around you about what you are comfortable with and what you're not. When you need alone time just turn off your notifications, grab a tea, your cosy blanket, grab your favourite book or turn on your favourite movie and enjoy your recharging time! When you don't feel like hanging out, just tell your friends, there is no need to force yourself to be sociable. We're not incomplete. we're just having a different way of dealing things compare to extroverts. For people who have introvert friends, care about them but please leave them alone sometimes when they need it, too much staying together time will stress  them out. Please leave them to make their choices, when they say no, then just leave them be, forcing them to be an extrovert will never be a good thing. You have to understand that when they don't join your friends doesn't mean that they hate your friends, it's just that they don't enjoy socializing with a huge group of people, they do enjoy talking to you, and introverts love deep conversation.

This post might not be really specific because I'm not a professional psychologist, the things that I stated are only my personal experiences, that might helps you to know how an introverts deal with things and how we think. If you don't know which category you're in, you can search up on YouTube, there are many videos that state a lot of professional facts about introverts, extroverts and ambiverts or you can do test online to know which one you are. And I'll see you in another time, bye. xx. :P 🌻

Flipped | Movie Recommendation

Hello everyone, today we're talking about movie again! This time I have a hand full of great movies to recommend to you guys (you know I am waiting for my results so I have lots of time) and most of them are quite old school, but today I'm just gonna recommend one movie because it'll be too long if I recommend all of them!

The first movie that I want to recommend is a cute teen movie, Flipped. Flipped is a 2010 movie but the story sets in 50s and 60s in America. So, this story is basically a love story between two young teen who are Julianna Bakers and Bryce Loski who live next door to each other. On 1957 the first day that Bryce moved next door to Juli's house and young Juli instantly fell in love with young Bryce because of his dazzling eyes but Bryce doesn't like to be with her because everyone in the neighbourhood thinks that Juli is a weird girl. Unfortunately, Juli is a girl who can't sense any hints, she thought Bryce keep avoiding her because he is shy and she wanted to make him less shy by calling him and hugging him in public. This story is told by different point of views of both Juli and Bryce characters so you can see what's their inner thought.  Juli have a little farm in her backyards with some hens in it, every time when her hens lay eggs, she will bring them to Bryce and his family until one day she found Bryce throwing her eggs away. The reason why Bryce threw them away is because of his obnoxious father who look down on Juli's family and thinks that Juli's eggs may kill them because her backyard is dirty and awful. Juli was so upset about Bryce throwing her eggs away instead of telling her the truth and also the time when Juli tried to protect the sycomore tree which she loved in the neighbourhood from cutting down by people, she begged Bryce to protect it with her but Bryce refused to. Bryce also feeling so upset after Julie ignored him, he seems to get used to have Juli annoys him. She also find out that Bryce was bad-mouthing about her retarded uncle with his jerky friend, Garrett in the library which Bryce was just trying to hide his feeling of liking Juli from his friend. All the things that Bryce did really hurts Juli even though Bryce didn't mean it, eventually Juli started to dislike him but Bryce started to face the truth that he actually likes the weird Juli. Bryce confess his love to Juli after Juli bids on Eddie at the basket boy auction instead of bidding on him by trying to kiss her during the basket boy lunch in the school but Juli dodged the kiss and ran away. After Juli kept herself in the room for days, she found out that she still like Bryce. When Bryce planted a sycamore tree in her backyards to say his sorry, and Juli forgives him.
I really like this story because it's just so cute and simple. Juli's characteristics is also the reason why I like this film, because she's just so kind and lovely, she would never hesitate to help anyone, she also never hesitate to do what she loves and what she believes in and that's why people think that she's weird but I like her.

Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe)
Anyway, he's so gorgeous even though he can be a bit jerky sometimes.

Julianna Bakers (Madeline Carroll)

That's it for today's post, see you soon, byeeeeeeeeee!

Vasco)

OST-  Gloomy Day

Room | Movie

Hello there, as you can see on the title, today I'm going to talk about a movie called "Room". Room released last year I'm not sure about the date but I'm sure that it's a 2015 movie. If you have watched the Oscar Awards 2016 you'll probably know this movie. The main actress of this movie who is Brie Larson won the Best Actress Awards in the Oscar 2016. And! The young actor Jacob Tremblay is so cute and he plays the character Jack so well.

Here's the picture of Brie winning Oscar, look how gorgeous she looks.

This is Jacob. Such a cutieeeeeee.

This is the character Joy and was played by Brie Larson.

This is the character Jack  and was played by Jacob Tremblay.

I did not watch Oscar because I do not like watching the whole award thing. The reason why I know this movie because I was recommended by my friend Jiaying aka Denim. Since it was holiday so I got the free time to watch it! Let's be honest, I do not think that everyone will love this movie like me and Jiaying do, because it's not that kind of movie that goes viral and attract your eyes immediately, or some people will get really boring watching it perhaps. I'm not sure what am I talking about, uhmmm, it's just not a movie that most people will watch, yeah I think you get it.

So the movie started with a little boy named Jack in a bed with his mom Joy, and he is telling her it is his five years old birthday. Then the film shows us their living lifestyles in a shed but they call it the room. The room is woody, dark, small, and there are everything in the room, the bath tub, toilet, wardrobe and bed. They live in the room for five years already since Jack was born, two years before Jack was born Joy already live inside the room. When the film first started, we got no idea why are they inside and never get out. Jack says a lot of weird stuffs that proved he never see the world outside the room because Joy told him that everything in the room was real and those showed on tv were unreal, and Jack believed that. They live there and was supplied food and electricity all that stuffs by a man they call the Old Nick. Old Nick aducted Joy 7 years ago and locked her inside the room with a hard and firm door that need password to open. During these 7 years Joy was mentally and sexually abused by the Old Nick. One day, Old Nick tells Joy that he lost his job he may not be able to afford their living supplies anymore so Joy realises that it's time to get out, and Jack is growing up he started to realise that what is happening around so Joy decided to get Jack and herself out of this room. Joy tells Jack the truth about the world but Jack cannot accept that, but eventually he realised the theory Joy told her. Joy and Jack got rescued by police and finally escaped the room. After they escaped they met a really tough problem which was how to connect with the world especially Jack. It was tough to overcome all these problems and stresses from the outside. At the end, they let down all their bad memories and finally lead their happy life. ( This is just a summary, I won't tell you how they escape and how they live after escaped, because I don't want to be a spoiler hahaha.)

My review of this movie: The script reflected Joy and Jack's thoughts and feelings really well. The script also showed Joy as a really brave mom, she's young but she knows what is good for Jack. Also, Jack character reflected children's thought, sometimes we thought kids don't know what are adults thinking but sometimes they're sensitive, they can feel what is going on. Sometimes adults make things complicated but childrens' simple thought make things clear and easily understand.

That's it about this post today, after you watched it lemme know what you think, byeeeeeee.
xoxo.

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared

Hello everyone, today I'm going to talk about a series of videos called Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. Some of you must be familiar about it, because it's a viral video on internet. It also have a YouTube channel that have the same name as the series. Okay, now let me introduce the series for you,  if you haven't know what it is. DHMIS is a British series of shorts. There are five episodes of DHMIS and each episode has a lesson like creativity, love, time, technology and the latest episode shows us healthy and the sixth episode is still producing. The producer presents the shorts like that kind of typical children tv shows that have music, dances, colourful backgrounds and puppets. There are three main characters who are puppets except the red one. They don't have a name given by the producer but names given by the fans. First, yellow one named Manny, the green duck/ bird idk named as Robin and the red one who is not a puppet called as Hairy/ Harry. There is also a creepy guy called Roy aka Manny's father. The videos always make you feel happy and relax at the beginning but the climax is always shocking and disturbing.

Manny aka the yellow guy

Robin aka the green duck/ bird

Hairy/ Harry aka the red guy

Roy aka Manny's father

I've been watching this series for quite a long time and I just thought it's just a disturbing series of videos and I don't think much of it. But few days ago I saw a video recommendation pops up on my YouTube home page and it says Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (1-5) Theory, I thought it was interesting so I watched it. Uhmmm... The theory blown my mind! I've never thought this series is such a deep and meaningful thing. There are a lot of little tiny clues telling you what is actually happening. The main thing that the producer want to show is how media take over the world and how children started brain washed by media and got manipulated by them just like the title of the series. I'm not sure if it's true but I saw someone's comment saying Don't Hug Me I'm Scared have a meaning. Hug means shielding while Scared means manipulated, so the whole title means they don't want people to shield things from them and they don't want to be manipulated, this is interesting isn't it?  Every episode is linked, there is story hidden inside if you watch it carefully. I found it really interesting, mysterious, a bit dark, deep, meaningful and genius. The producer is so intelligent. I have to stop here, I don't want to be a spoiler, go watch it yourself! If you're interested you can click the link below to watch the whole series of DHMIS first then watch the theory given by a YouTube channel called CP Games. There are tons of theory on the internet but I think his theory is the most believable and logical one. He had two videos one is his theory of DHMIS and second one is a video clearing up some questions he left from the first one. I need to say that he is a genius, he found a lot of clues. He will be a great detective, his channel is quite interesting too, go shows him some supports by subscribing him, he deserves more subscribers!

DISCLAIMER:
1) DHMIS is really disturbing and dark. (There are gores that will make you throw up.)
2) The theory videos tell you the truth inside this series so it may creeps you out a little bit. I got goosebumps everywhere after  I watched it especially ROY, he makes me felt uncomfortable and disturbing.
